10 day Taste of Chicago festival turns into 5 day Taste of Chicago weekend event
Talk of the town this week is that the Taste of Chicago has been shortened to a 5 day event and moved to the dates July 11-15 for 2012. I’m not sure why everyone’s so salty about the news. I’m down with cutting the Taste of Chicago a bit short, because who actually went all 10 days? (aside from the represented restaurants and the cops that stand around and eat the food). Like, did anybody take their work vacation that week so they could head down to Grant Park on the 100-degree summer day to make sure they tried a sample from EVERY tent. 10 days was too long.
Anyway, Taste of Chicago is really just the city’s largest people-watching festival. And when you get hungry, there’s food there. You don’t go there for the food, it’s likely to be overpriced and undercooked, but there is food if you want it.
It was however, wrong to change the dates. 4th of July weekend brings a lot of summer tourists and residents alike into downtown. Commercially, its a great weekend for Chicago businesses to make some extra money. Now we have no Taste of Chicago, and no fireworks in Chicago for the 4th of July.
