Chicago 2011: The year in pictures

Spent 2011 under a rock? Here’s what you missed in Chicago: The Chicago 2011 blizzard, Rahm Emanuel

It started with a blizzard:

At a near-record-setting 20.2 inches, the Chicago 2011 blizzard was the 3rd worst in Chicago history. February 2, 2011 will be forever known as the day hundreds of people got stranded in their cars on Lake Shore Drive while thousands watched it on TV thinking, “sucks to be that guy.” It took days to make the streets commutable again, giving many people their first ‘snow day’ since the 2nd grade. The city was not issuing parking tickets for over a week, as many cars and parking spaces were buried under 3 feet of snow.

Despite a long and heated dispute with residency requirements, Rahm Emanuel won the Chicago mayoral election on February 23, 2011. With 55% of the vote and $10.7 million in campaign funds. Mayor Richard Daley had stepped down after his 21-year run in September 2010.

If you didn’t hear about this one, you literally were living under a rock. If you missed it, I wrote up a Chicago rant on it. But a brief synopsis of this story: it’s a tale of corruption, greed, wiretapping, and a plea of innocence that ended with a 14 year prison sentence. Children’s book coming soon.

I’d imagine just about everyone remembers where they were during the Chicago hailstorm of 2011. Hopefully you weren’t in a car. The cost of property damage of the storm was in the millions as cars, houses, roofs, skylights, well just about everything was pelted with ice ranging from the size of a penny, to as big as a golfball. Yes, as big as golfballs. You had to see it to believe it.
